TL;DR - Find their calling and they'll amaze you every single day
You must have heard the famous Confucius saying that if you choose a job you love, you will never have to work a day in your life.
But there are only a handful of such lucky ones out there…
Now, research has also proved that working in a profession of your own choosing has magical results for you and your employer as well.
So, we’re going to use this proven technique to help you boost your grumpy team members’ morale.
Today’s research comes out of a wonderful book titled “Habits of the Heart: Individualism and Commitment in American Life” by Professor Robert N. Bellah and his colleagues. It is a book that continues to be cited by thousands of researchers from all sorts of disciplines.
The major work that these wonderful researchers did was to categorize people’s relations with work into three distinct groups - Job, Career, and Calling.
Here is a brief description of each:
Job - People who perceive their work as a job are in there only to meet their financial needs. They have no attachment to their work and would love to do something else if given the chance.
Career - Career-minded employees do not loathe their work as much as the previous category. They are more interested in career advancement for the prestige and authority that comes with it.
Calling - As evident from the word, these employees are the ones who consider their work as the mission of their lives. In other words, they think that they were meant to pursue this path. For them, their work is the most important aspect of their life, regardless of the pay and career growth they receive.
This book highlighted the fact that employees who fall in the third category were the ones who had the potential to make a difference.
Later on, numerous researchers went exploring down this road and came back with similarly encouraging results.
For example, a research done by Amy Wrzesniewski and her team reported that employees who worked in a profession they felt passionate about were happier, healthier, and more satisfied with their jobs!
What can you do?
You must be wondering, “Why am I being told this long story of how employees perceive their work?”. Well, you must have encountered employees in your team who just don’t respond to counseling, recognition, or any other method to improve their performance.
Research says that you can engage such employees just by identifying their callings and making adjustments in their job responsibilities to include the type of work they love.
It’s that simple!
For example, there is a resource who happens to be an extrovert and feels caged in her desk job. Her manager can simply hand her some additional responsibilities that are a good match for the restless extrovert in her. There you go. You will be surprised by the sudden uplift in her spirits leading to a happier employee who has become more productive - by taking an extra workload!
A win-win solution for all.
